Thanks for making the Los Angeles event great!

I just wanted to thank all the attendees who came out to the first Palm Pre Dev camp today. While we had a few technical glitches and weren’t able to stream live, the event brought in a great bunch! Watch for my emails coming soon with the resources, sample code and tips and tricks from the event! Also, thanks to Danielle and Suzanne of Where Meet/Mix/Mogul (http://wheremmm.com) for providing the space for the event and being so helpful in taking care of all the things I missed. They helped to make this first event a success!

Thanks!

Charles

Los Angeles Palm Pre Dev Camp Schedule!

I’ve unashamedly lifted this agenda from the great Pre Dev Camp organizer Lisa Brewster. I had a lot of the same things planned, she just wrote it up in a much more succinct fashion. I have just added in a few of the things specific to our meeting:

The What:
9:45 am – Doors open
10:15 am – Welcome session
10:30 am – SDK and IDE installation check
10:45 to 12:30 pm – Intro to Pre development hands-on and an overview of the Mojo technologies (Javascript, HTML5, CSS3 etc)
12:30 to 1:30 pm – Lunch (everyone chips in for pizza delivery or something)
1:30 to 2:30pm – Wrap up Intro to Palm Pre development and open Q&A session
2:30 to 2:45 pm – Break
2:45 to 3:45 pm – Announcements, demo your app
3:45 to 4:45 pm (flexible) – Prizes raffle, open discussion
4:45 pm – Closing remarks
5:00 to 6:00 pm – Cleanup
6:00 pm – After party at a local restaurant/pub  TBD (Open to suggestions)

The Where:
The Where Meet/Mix/Mogul Building
1519 Griffith Park Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90026

The How:
By attending this free event of couse :)

The schedule is pretty flexible, so, if a particular session has a lot of interest, we may spend more time in that area (such as the question & answer section).  During the Intro to Palm Pre Development section, I will try and cover some main features like dynamically loading data, how MVC works in Mojo, file organization, some development gotchas, and some Javascript topics like closures and the ever-elusive “this” keyword.

If anyone wants anything included that’s not covered, don’t hesitate to speak up and we’ll try to see if it would fit into the program. I want this to be as useful to the people who come, so don’t take the above schedule as set in stone. I want to incorporate any good ideas and will revise the schedule accordingly.

A call for presenters and sample apps..

If  you will be attending the August 8th, Los Angeles Pre Dev Camp and have a topic related to Palm Pre development you’d like to present, speak now or forever hold your Pre :) .  Also, I sent out an email recently to all the attendees, but, I thought I should put it up on the site as well.  If you have an app you’re working on or have finished and wouldn’t mind sharing it with the group Saturday, don’t hesitate to leave a comment and I’ll squeeze in some time for you to show off your app in the latter half of the day. If we have a lot of apps to present, I can’ t guarantee that everyone will be able to show their app off, but, I will try and get as many in as possible.  You don’t need to prepare anything fancy. We will just show your app up on the projector via the built-in camera on my laptop directly off your phone. If you have it running on your own laptop and not on the device we will see how quickly we can hook up your laptop to the projector to show it off.

Pizza seems to be the consensus so far..

Regarding food choices for lunch, pizza seems to be the consensus so far.  Good call by Allan for suggesting this. It is a much safer choice than Subway. If anyone has any other suggestions, there is still time, but, August 8th will be here before you know it :)

Don’t forget to register at Palm and download the SDK!

To make the upcoming August 8th Dev Camp go smoother, make sure you have already signed up as a developer at the Palm Developer Site.  Download the SDK and install your IDE of choice. We will be presenting our code walkthroughs using the  Eclipse IDE with the Aptana Studio plugin for it’s HTML and Javascript support. This will allow us to jump right into hands-on coding and not take up the first part of the morning installing programs.

The Palm WebOS 1st Edition is now in print!

Late last week, Mitch Allen’s Palm WebOS development book finally hit store shelves. You can check it out at O’Reilly’s site.  We’re hoping to have some copies to hand out as prizes this Saturday, August 8th at our Dev Camp.

Full Los Angeles Schedule coming tonight..

Sorry folks, it’s been a busy weekend getting everything prepared for the August 8th, 2009 Los Angeles Palm Pre Dev Camp. I will be posting the full schedule tonight. I haven’t heard from anyone regarding food choices for lunch when I sent out an email, so I’m going to ask on the site as well. We’re all pitching in for lunch, so, I don’t want to be the only one to choose the restaurant.  I’ll be contacting subway if nobody states another choice.

The Los Angeles Palm Pre Dev Camp has a Venue!!

Sorry for the late update folks. The Los Angeles Palm Pre Dev Camp has a venue! We are going to kick off the event at 10 am Saturday morning until 5pm at:

The Where Meet/Mix/Mogul Building
1519 Griffith Park Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90026
Saturday, August 8th, 2009
Meeting Time: 10am – 5pm

I will have details on parking later today. I will be putting together the agenda tonight and get it out to everyone this weekend. I am getting a number of raffle prizes that you can win just for attending! Also, if anyone has any topics they’d like covered, please contact us through the contact us link (or just write a comment). I will be showing an app or 2 that I’m working on. I’m going to schedule some time in the day to show off apps for anyone who wants to.

I look forward to seeing everyone there!
